Office 2021 End of Support: What Ends October 13 and What Your Business Should Do
Office 2021, Office LTSC 2021, Windows Server 2012/2012 R2, and Windows 11 24H2 (Home and Pro) all lose Microsoft security updates on the same day. Here is what that means and how to triage it.
October 13, 2026
In May 2017, the WannaCry ransomware worm spread through unpatched Windows systems and shut down parts of the UK's National Health Service, forcing hospitals to turn away non-emergency patients (The Register). Microsoft had patched the flaw two months earlier for supported systems. For old, unsupported versions of Windows, there was no fix until Microsoft took the unusual step of releasing emergency patches for Windows XP and Server 2003 (Threatpost).
That exception was rare, and it is not something any business should plan around. On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Microsoft's October security release doubles as a finish line for several products at once. The software will still open on October 14. It just stops being fixed.
What ends on October 13, 2026
| Product | What happens | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 | End of support. No extension and no paid extended updates. | Microsoft 365 Apps, or Office LTSC 2024 |
| Windows Server 2012 / 2012 R2 | Year 3, the final year of Extended Security Updates (ESU), ends. No year four. | Windows Server 2022 or 2025, or Azure |
| Windows 11 24H2 (Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations) | End of monthly updates. Enterprise and Education editions continue to October 12, 2027. | Windows 11 25H2 |
| Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 | End of extended support. | A supported Windows 11 release |
Also worth knowing: Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on the same date, but it keeps receiving security updates under extended support until October 14, 2031 (BleepingComputer). No action is needed there. Microsoft is also retiring Publisher as a standalone program on this date (Microsoft Support).
Already on Windows 10? That is a separate deadline with its own consequences, covered in our guide: Still Running Windows 10 in 2026? Here's What You're Actually Risking.
Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021
Microsoft's own notice is direct: after October 13, 2026, there will be no technical support, bug fixes, or security updates for Office LTSC 2021, and the change may increase security exposure and affect compliance requirements (Microsoft Learn). The consumer and small-business Office 2021 edition ends the same day, with no extension and no extended security updates (Microsoft Support).
This is a sharper cliff than older Office versions. Perpetual releases such as Office 2016 and 2019 had a five-year extended support phase after mainstream support. Office 2021 has none.
Why "it still works" is the trap
Word, Excel, and Outlook are the most common way malicious files reach your staff. Every flaw found in Office 2021 after October 13 stays open permanently, and attackers know which version you are running the moment a document is opened.
Your three realistic paths
Microsoft 365 Apps
Microsoft's recommended path. Always current, includes cloud storage and security features, priced per user per month.
Office LTSC 2024
The on-premises option for organizations not ready for the cloud. Supported until October 2029.
Do nothing
Not recommended. Unsupported Office on machines that open email attachments all day is a preventable risk.
Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2
Extended support for these servers ended on October 10, 2023. Since then, patches have only come through the paid ESU program, which covers security fixes rated critical and important and runs a maximum of three years (Microsoft Lifecycle FAQ). That third year closes on October 13, 2026, and Microsoft's documentation states that updates stop when the program ends (Microsoft Learn).
Of everything on this list, this is the highest-risk item. Servers hold your data, your identities, and often your line-of-business applications. An unpatched server that is reachable from the network is exactly the kind of target ransomware crews look for.
What to do
- Find every 2012 server now. Include the forgotten ones: the file server in the closet, the old domain controller, the virtual machine nobody owns.
- Migrate the workload, not just the operating system. Upgrading in place across this many versions is rarely clean. A new server on Windows Server 2022 or 2025, or a move to a cloud-hosted environment, is usually safer.
- If a legacy application blocks you, isolate the server: no direct internet access, tight firewall rules, restricted admin accounts, and monitored backups. This is a stopgap while you migrate, not a plan.
Migration takes weeks, not days, and the deadline is 14 days away. If you have not started, call your IT provider this week.
Windows 11 version 24H2
Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education editions of the same version keep receiving updates until October 2027. Unmanaged Home and Pro devices should be moved automatically to 25H2 (BleepingComputer).
The catch for businesses is the word unmanaged. If you defer feature updates through Intune, Windows Update for Business, WSUS, or a similar tool, those PCs will not move on their own. Check both the version and the edition of each machine, because they follow different dates (Pro IT NW). Version 25H2 is supported for Home and Pro until October 12, 2027.
The good news: for eligible PCs, this is a routine feature update, not a hardware replacement.
Triage for a 15-person office
You do not need a project plan. You need an afternoon and this list.
- Inventory. List every PC and server with its Windows version, edition, and Office version. In Word or Excel, go to File → Account to see the Office version.
- Flag the red items. Servers on 2012/2012 R2 come first. Then any PC running Office 2021 or LTSC 2021.
- Update the easy ones. Move Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro machines to 25H2 through Windows Update. Confirm it completed rather than assuming.
- Decide on Office. Most small offices are best served by Microsoft 365 Apps. Choose LTSC 2024 only if you have a specific reason to stay on-premises.
- Protect what cannot move yet. Isolate the system, limit who can log in, verify backups, and give it a firm retirement date.
Compliance and insurance. Unsupported software can create problems beyond security. Many cyber insurance applications, and frameworks such as HIPAA and PCI DSS, expect systems to receive security updates. Check your policy and your compliance obligations, and ask your advisor if you are unsure.
Frequently asked questions
Will Office 2021 stop working on October 14?
No. The apps keep opening. What stops is security updates, bug fixes, and technical support (Microsoft Support).
Can I buy extended security updates for Office 2021?
No. Microsoft states there is no extension and no extended security updates for Office 2021.
Are Windows Server 2012 ESUs available for another year?
No. The program is capped at three years, and the third ends October 13, 2026. Servers hosted in Azure are covered by the same end date.
Is Windows Server 2022 affected?
Only by a change in support phase. Security updates continue until October 14, 2031.
Which should I choose: Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2024?
For most small businesses, Microsoft 365 Apps. It stays current and integrates with cloud storage and email security. LTSC 2024 suits fixed-function or offline environments.
