May 2024 Update: Pen Testing & Hardening

Behind the Scenes, Ahead of the Threats

Most of what we do at ITGuys happens quietly in the background. You don’t see it, you don’t feel it, but you’d sure notice if we didn’t do it.

This May, we ran our biannual penetration testing and hardening project. In plain English: we let a trusted 3rd party try to break into the systems we manage, then we went in and made them tougher. It’s the digital version of locking the doors, checking the windows, and installing a smarter alarm system.

Why We Do It

Cyber threats don’t nap. If we skipped these tests, customers would be left open to breaches, ransomware, and other headaches. This project is our way of saying: attackers might try, but they are not getting through on our watch.

How It Works

• Every six months we run these tests.
• We bring in a 3rd party to keep us honest.
• We use tools like Nessus to scan for holes.
• We tailor the tests for each customer: some have servers, some run cloud apps, some rely on firewalls. It all gets covered.

When gaps are found, we fix them. Sometimes that means patching software, sometimes tightening firewalls, sometimes recommending email protections like DMARC. (A few customers added that this round, others chose to hold off. We make the recommendation, you decide.)

And importantly, we ratchet up security gradually. No sudden or painful changes. The goal: keep systems easy to use and locked down.
